First and foremost, this is a travelogue of the imagination, following my attempts at recreating the sort of armies that I dreamed of as a young teenager in the early 1980's.
Back then an 'army' would be around 60 models, which, at 30 pence each could take quite a while to build up on the kind of pocket money I had back then.
Over the last 30 years or more, I have lived, breathed and worked for games culminating in owning (and by the way losing) Dungeons & Starships along the way. But no matter what cruel fate has dished out, sooner or later I've regained my passion for wargaming.
In the Winter of 2011 as I completed the manuscript for '(Real) Life's A Bugger - A Tale Of Sex, Dragons and Rock 'N' Roll' I was revisiting my youth in the widescreen cinema of the mind and decided that at 43 I was facing a downhill run to to a 6 foot deep hole. What to do?
Well, the answer was to actually get off my backside, and create two armies using the figures that I'd have had access to as a kid, but more importantly I decided to creat a whole display game which would look 'just right' were it transported via time machine to 'a show somewhere, circa 1984'
I think 1984 was the pivotal point for the hobby for me. I won the first of 22 painting awards on March of that year and so it sticks in my mind. What's more, some of the really talented painters that I learned from were pushing the envelope, the most noted for me being Peter Armstrong and Andy Ritson.
Although I paint every day to make a living, the figures I am painting for P.P are heavily in the style of the 80's painters. True, I could do some wondrous things with my skills and the materials available today, but that's not the point. I want to create a slice of my youth in the way I imagined it would be if I had the money back then. The project has to be able to tip the hat to those people and companies that inspired me. Andy, Pete... If you read this, then this site is dedicated to you.
To control my urges and make it all the more of a challenge, I had to set a few limits. One upon which I decided was to only use Ral Partha Figures or those produced under the agreements with other Companies such as Citadel Miniatures. So far, with 800 figures awaiting my attention, I've managed to keep to this 'rule'.
This site will aslo be somewhere to swap Ral Partha miniatures, and even display your own Ral Partha projects - just drop me a line and ask for a gallery. I am also considering allowing dealers to have a full page advert at a nominal fee of say $15 per YEAR. This to me is better than having a forum where traders are constantly touting their wares and using up valuable space. If $15 is too much for a full page which stays up all year round, then so be it, tout elsewhere.
No doubt, other ideas will crop up and I am alays open to suggestions.
